TRENTO
In the early modern period Trento was the chief city of a prince-bishopric, part of the broader political sphere of the Holy Roman Empire. A linguistic, political and cultural border city, Trento was a crucial stop on the commercial route between Italy and Germany. Located on the road to the Brenner pass, it was at the centre of a commercial route leading to Bolzano, Innsbruck, Augsburg and Nuremberg in the north, and Brescia, Verona and Venice in the south. Situated between the County of Tyrol and the Republic of Venice, in the sixteenth century it had a population of around 5000, the majority of whom were Italian speaking.
